How does an Italian Company Look at the Present and Future Challenges of Crop Protection?

Alessandra Longoni, Finchimica | Agri Business Review | Top Sustainable Farming Companies in EuropeAlessandra Longoni, Commercial and Business Development Director, Finchimica
Finchimica is an Italian company, established in 1976. We have always been active in the field of crop protection at global level, in some important geographies like USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Even if worldwide present, we are still an Italian company and still making leverage on our Italian DNA to approach crop protection, in the present days, but also thinking about the future.

We have always been putting the highest level of quality, safety and commitment in all our projects and products. And in fact, despite a growing operational complexity and an increasingly challenging context, we are still running our plant in Italy, satisfying, and sometimes anticipating, the highest levels of safety standards for human health and for the environment.

We believe that it is not enough to be good at making crop protection, but it must be done with the utmost awareness of operating in a complex industry, for which the exercise of responsibility requires the highest attention and important investments. And Finchimica, since its birth, has been guided by this commitment, knowing no other way of doing business.

As you know, Italy is one important producer and exporter of food, high quality food. In Italy IPM has been since many years the approach spontaneously followed by growers even if for IPM and organic agriculture there are still many issues to address from a political and institutional point of view.

And it is in this Italian scenario, that Finchimica is working for the present and for the future of agriculture, aware of being called to make one's contribution.

Sustainability to us means the development of a pipeline of biorationals to integrate the present traditional agrochemical offer, going from natural extracts to microbials; it also means to offer accessible prices to growers so that they can earn the right remuneration for their yields; sustainability also means our company continuity, giving work to more than 100 families, supporting school courses in scientific subjects and enhancing the great female potential of young graduates in STEM disciplines.
We are everyday innovating: we fully believe that without this continuous and daily research to improve ourselves, we would not have survived for almost 50 years in the market.

Innovation is everyday declined in our activities, from our way of thinking to and developing new products, to the manufacturing: last year we started the synthesis in our plant of a new fungicide, for the control of some diseases, among which oidium, on different crops. The plant is the best that technology can offer today, respecting the highest standards of safety, thus also allowing Finchimica to being fully integrated in the manufacturing of mixtures containing this active ingredient.
  • "We are everyday innovating: we fully believe that without this continuous and daily research to improve ourselves, we would not have survived for almost 50 years in the market," states Alessandra Longoni, Commercial and Business Development Director

And we are proud to offer this new fungicide to our partners, as a possibility of cooperation for their own product development.

Another example of our Italian DNA approach is that we are always trying to make the supply chain as short as possible, in order to reduce the impact of logistics and, whenever possible, to exploit producers and products coming from Europe/Italy.

Last, but not least, when developing products, we always try to take into consideration minor uses or crops for which protection products are limited but that still represent peculiar and important productions, for example in the Mediterranean zone, but not only. As an example, we have recently obtained the LEX to pears for the control of Stemphilium for our product Fluazinova Plus, 500SC fluazinam based or many minor uses approval for our Botrefin (fludioxonil + cyprodinil WG) 2w mix.

Agriculture is not one country one crop one solution approach. Climate, territory and many other factors influence quality and quantity of production. And we are more determined than ever to support the future of agriculture, evaluating every possible path of innovation, investing important human and economic resources.
